I got married last year and both me and my wife own homes. Can we claim the mortgage interest for both of our homes if we file jointly - or do we have to file separate?
Thanks!
Yes, you can have a second home and use the interest on your MFJ return. If you are renting it out, that is different. You would need to do another form (Schedule E?). Not sure if the interest would go there or on your Schedule A, but it will be used. It is almost always better to file MFJ than MFS, but you can do the numbers both ways and see which is best for your situation.
