  • Tax Question - Married Filing Jointly

I am getting married later this year. Can I change my W4 now in anticipation of the marriage that will happen later this year, or do employers and/or IRS require marriage certificate to change my W4?

    Thanks!

I've changed my withholding several times without them ever asking for any proof. My husband still claims single 0 so we don't owe so much in taxes. Good luck!

The way I understand it, the IRS isn't concerned with your W4, as long as you don't severely under-withhold for the year.

I'd say that you could change it with no issues. That sounds like good planning to me

You can certainly change it; just make sure you estimate your taxes so you don't get hit with a huge bill

Ok, thanks. Going to change it up, which will reduce taxes withheld from my paycheck!

The only thing which matters to the IRS is the tax return you file each year. How things get withheld is completely up to you (withhold too little and you might be in for a world of hurt though).
