  • Recording mileage for taxes

I drive about 500 miles a year for my contracting work, and really should be documenting this so I can take the milage deduction. (Hey, every little bit counts.)

What do I have to record? Can I just put down the date of the trip and the miles, or do I have to record the odometer readings each time?

You don't need the odometer readings. Just record the number of miles driven and for what purpose.

DS is right, you just have to have a record in case you are audited. Keep in mind commute to the office (if you have one) does NOT count.
