  • AUto insurance for car not in use

ok I have a vehicle I don't plan on driving for at least 4 months.
It's worth about 10 grand. I currently carry no fault auto Michigan insurance. I have a great rate due to my high credit score and no accident history. I carry a 2,000 collision deductable(I am comfortable with it)

The car will be parked in my attatched garage during these months.

I was thinking of just taking off the collision for the few months even though savings will be tiny due to great rate. Of course I would NEVER even pull a car out of the driveway uninsured.

I hear if you cancel a policy altogether it can up your rates b/c rates are higher for you if your insurance was interrupted. I have had AAA insurance for over 10 years.

I am going to call myself later, but was wondering if insurance companies have special "parked car rates" of insurances?
My parents decrease or remove insurance for thier corvette in the Michigan winter.

We used to own Mustangs that weren't driven in the winter. We called the agent and they didn't cancel the policy outright, but they were able to scale it way back so that it was minimal to insure. I forget how they referred to it, coverage wise.

I would call and explain the situation and ask how best to handle it to save the most money. Just keep theft and fire coverage, I would think.

I have a summer-only car, and in the winter it goes on a "fire and theft only" policy. I'm looking at cancelling that, as my home insurance may cover fire/natural disaster damage to the car because it is parked in an attached garage. Theft is not a worry, the car is on jack stands and has other security in place (and it is not worth a whole lot anyway).

I do not have to worry about cancellation fee or higher rates, though, as I have all three of our cars on the same policy. As long as I maintain at least one car on the policy, I can add/remove the summer car without affecting its rates.

Phone up the insurance company. They'll know where to direct you. Worst come to worst, you'll be unable to scale back.
