My husband's company has had some layoffs of some support staff. He is in government sales so he is seeing some budget cutoffs from some other areas. Any overtime by the remaining support staff is gone and the little perks of lunch being brought in once or twice a week is gone as well.
My mom is in the newspaper industry (customer service) she got laid 18 months ago and then joined another newspaper (total fluke same industry) and there were same layoffs there in printing area. She works in the advertiisng side and the big advertisers local department stores have really cut down on their advertising budget so she honestly doesn't know how long she will be there for. She works just PT so she will offically retire when this job ends.
Ahhhh, Okay, well good for her. I hope she doesn't get laid at this new job
My company is closing most of its US plants (metals industry) and shifting orders to mine, which is the largest. Even with this action, the plant where I work is operating at less than 50% capacity. My plant has let most of its 500+ contractors go and has reassigned their work to keep its own employees busy, right down to janitorial services. But if orders do not pick up within the next month, there will be much tougher decisions to be made.

Reason: ETA clarification for type of business where I work
My line of work (Defense) hasn't seen any cuts, but if Obama ends the war I will certainly see some slight slowdowns.
A friend works for a auto manufacturer (not an American one), and even they cut down worker hours to 4 days a week from 5 and are begging people to take long vacations over the holiday because they don't have demand to keep everyone busy. He's hurting from losing 1/5th of his pay.
I'm in public education, and as of right now, we haven't been hurt. I'm in a very secure position (Speech-Language Pathologist), and I don't see my position being cut. We will most likely be hit when it comes to ordering materials for our students, though.
My husband was laid off two weeks ago. Thankfully they are letting him work until the end of the year and paying his vacation time off. We will be hurting though. As he's taken a job that is half of his pay.
