  • delinquent bill

About a month ago I received a bill from a collection agency for about $100. No biggie since it is only $100 but had no clue what the bill is for or from. I was surprised to get this note from a collection agency as I am proactive about my bills.

I call the agency and ask for a itemized document and inform them that I am not delinquent on this bill since it is the first time I have seen it.

Now they are threatening by mail to report it to the credit bureaus that this bill is 60 days past due, but I still have not received the itemized bill. What can I do? I need to call again but what other actions should I take?

    Thanks,

Sounds fishy to me. I would make sure that the company is legit first. If so, then I would call them back and continue to speak with people up the chain (I'd like to speak to your supervisor, etc.) until you get an answer.

I would have them fax a copy of the original reciept. If it does not have your signiture and you do not recall it, I would make them prove it is yours.

Tell them you need proof it is not a scam.

        Thanks,
They are required by law to send you proof of the debt. If they put it on your credit file without sending you proof, report that to the credit reporting agencies.

Then call them and tell them you are going to sue them for violating the fair debt collection practices act if they don't send you proof, in writing, immediately.

Don't pay a dime until you've confirmed that you actually owe this. Don't listen to any of their threats, no matter what they say.
