Saw a similar number yesterday in the USA Today. I think it was also discussing how the average downpayment has gone up to $3200 from a little over $2000. I bought a new (used) car with cash in June. I got a good deal, but wonder what I could do now.

I like the high qualifications for lending as well. It may seem frustrating if you can't qualify, but now we're seeing how important it is to the economy...
