  • Discover More ?

I was informed about a sign-up bonus offer for the Discover More card where I could get $100 back after making $250 in purchases in the first 3 months. Now, I could probably accomplish that just using it for groceries I would be buying anyway.

Of course, the nonexistant annual fee is appealing. And 0% APR for a year is nice as well. It's also offering 0% for 12 months on balance transfers, but I don't have a balance to transfer at the moment, so does anyone know whether this is one of those "upon application only" BT offers?

The 5% cashback sounds great, but does anyone know what purchases this actually applies to? The site states things like travel, gas, resturants, department stores... and gas is the only thing among those that I would use it for regularly, since I don't travel or go to resturants often (2 small children make that difficult) and I only shop at department stores when the kids need new clothes in the spring and fall.

For those of you who may have this card, what is your experience with it?

And for anyone else who's interested in the offer, it seems you must apply at apply.Discovercard.com and use the offer code "DARR", or you can call 1-800-210-9022.

I don't have the More card, but the 5% bonuses are by quarters. This quarter is gas and hotels, the next quarter will be something different.

You'd need to talk to a CSR about whether the BT offer is "upon application only"

I would recommend Chase's Freedom card over Discover. I have both -- the Discover gets used once a month and is put away. The Freedom card's rewards put the More card to shame. It's also easier to qualify for and you will probably get a higher Credit Limit. If you open a Chase checking account, you get triple rewards in 5 categories instead of 3. You could easily get $15 per month or more just on gas, groceries and bills.

      Check http://www.chase.com for a $50 bonus deal.

Of course, there's nothing to stop you from applying for both.

I have the chase rewards business cards. I ususally get $50-100 a month in checks, but we charge a lot at home depot for building materials.

I have the discover card at 0% intrest. The transfer balance can be done anytime, they charge like, 2% to transfer the balance.
The 5% cashback changes quarterly. This summer its on gas and hotels. Online, when you sign into your account, click the '5%' icon and it will show you the 5% cashback purchases for the year. So you can anticipate what to buy when. I think clothes are for next quarter. That suprised me considering back to school is coming up.
I like my discover card. But when the 0% is up next month it jumps to 20% intrest for me. ouch.

We just got the Discover More card 3 months ago and just received the $100 bonus this past month. I liked the card because of the bonus and the special 5% categories. Especially right now with 5% on gas, it is very useful. However, be warned that there is a limit on how much you can get back in that category. From what I remember reading the 5% back is only applicable to the first $400 spent in that category. (which equals $20 in cash back). So while gas is the special category for 4 months, once you spend $400 in gas, you don't get the benefit of the 5% back. Another caveat to the card is that they say up to 1% back on all other purchases. It starts out at about 0.25% for maybe the first $1500 in purchases, and then the next $1500 are at .5% and then the next $1500 are at .75% and then after $1500 more in purchases you are finally at 1%. Since we don't put much on our credit cards each month, it would take us forever to get to the 1% back. Since I have already received the sign-up bonus, I decided to only use the discover card for gasoline purchases at 5% and just continue using our Citi Mastercard, where our 1% cash back really is 1%.

I have the Discover More card and it works well. 5% on what they say, and on the rest is is 0.25% until your total purchases exceed $1500, then 0.5% until your total annual purchases exceed $3000, then all other purchases are at 1%.

Generally everything I buy goes on to my Citi Mastercard which gives 2% on Gas, Groceries and Drugstores and 1% on everything else. The Discover is used for all 5% purchases during the quarter. The balance transfer can be made after you have applied. I really like Discover which is why I keep the card, and the rewards aren't half bad either.

atomicrc- sounds like we have the exact same credit cards and use them the same way. (Thanks for clarifying the exact percentages for cash back on the discover. I wasn't 100% sure so I just guessed)

I hate Discover's laddering for non-More items and the More items themselves make me feel like they're trying to control my spending. Maybe I'm just a wee bit sensitive about such things. I used to be a big Discover fan though.

Now I use the PFCU VISA. It pays 5% on gas, 2% on groceries, and 1.25% on everything else as a rebate to that month's bill. Their website is nothing to write home about, but their CSR's are super nice.

savingmama - sure, no problem. I actually had to read the terms to make sure I was right, but it does say total annual purchases and not just other purchases, so to me that means the 5% purchases count toward the level of annual purchases as well.

I suppose if I put everything possible on the Discover Card I would probably get more cash back than my using both the Citi Mastercard and Discover Card. Reason being the Citi Mastercard has a limit of $300 cash back per year. Now I don't get anywhere close to that, but the 5% makes up for some of the purchases on the Discover at 0.25% and 0.50%. Also, I like how the Discover rewards, you can redeem $20 in rewards for $25 gift cards to restaurants. That only increases the rewards. I like getting restaurant gift cards because I get that extra $5 and the treat of going out to dinner.
