I want to get an American Express card. I am very faithful with all of my credit cards to pay them off in full each month.

I'm looking at the Clear card and the Blue card. They both look like good options for me. I am looking for a card that gives 0% for 12 months.

The Blue card is 0% up to 15 months & the Clear card is 0% up to 12 months.

Does anyone know how hard is it to qualify for the 12 months? I just don't want to apply and then get only 6 months.

I don't know my credit score. Should I pull it? If so, where do you recommend?

Have you called American Express up and voiced this concern with them? Are you afraid of ruining your credit by applying for the card?

I don't get why you just don't apply to see if you get it or not.........excuse any ignorance on my part.

Huh? Why would you want to apply for a card where the "reward" is 0% interest? Didn't you just say you PIF each month? If you intend to pay-in-full each month, then the best "reward" is a card that gives you money back (not a 0% rate that you'll never use).... unless I'm missing something here.

This is probably what I'll end up doing. I'm not concerned about ruining my credit by applying for it. The 12 months would just be more useful to us than the 6 months.

I do PIF each month on my current cards. I have 2 cards that give me excellent rewards. I use them for all of my purchases.

DH is going back to school in the fall. We have his tuition money in the bank, but we would really like to pay it off in payments. Having the 0% purchases card would allow us to do this. We would like to charge the tuition then, pay it off throughout the semester. Then, come Spring semester, do the same thing.

Ok that describes the next year or so. But are these repeatable? I think the 0% deal is only for the first x period.... i don't think you can just "renew" the rate so to speak. It's for a new account only. Are you intending to apply for new accounts every semester or year? This will hurt your credit rating.

I do not plan to get any more credit cards. His schooling is for one full year (Fall, Spring & Summer). The 0% for the Blue card is up to 15 months and the Clear card is up to 12 months. If I qualify for the 15 months on the blue card, then this would completely cover his whole program. The rate wouldn't expire before then.

With the AMEX, I would be able to use it at Costco. Also, it does have rewards. It gives 1 point for every dollar spent. So, for non-bonus purchases (on my other cards), I can use the AMEX.

Ah. okay. I see now. One year education that you already have money in the bank for.... just you'd rather make payments (thereby earning some interest) rather than lose it all up front. Payments free of any interest charges.

As to whether or not they'll accept you, you can only call them to find out. Iterate that if it's not the 12 month 0% rate, that you're not interested. Most likely, if you do have good credit, they'll play ball with you. But the only way to find out is to call them.

CC companies are re-thinking rates and terms and lowering CC limits right now because of the economy. So it will also depend on American Express's criteria.... which only they know.

I'll give them a call tonight. Should they be able to tell me before I apply what I would qualify for?

You will have to apply first to see what they offer you in case you are approved.
