i started claiming 0 not too long ago, it does really f'n suck tho. Ive seen some (would have been) good checks, until those bastards slicke off a 400 dollar piece of my check. Between paying into my retirement tier 1 and 2, union dues, insurance, fed, and state taxes i think they've cut off as much as 700 from a check!

I NEED SOME DEDUCTIONS!!! only prob is im only 21 n' i own nothing.

Only $700? Sounds like a bargain to me...

Deductions are overrated. First, you have to spend money on something to get a deduction. For example, if you buy a house you can get a deduction on mortgage interest and property taxes, but keep in mind you're paying thousands a month to get that deduction.

Also, do you take the standard deduction instead of itemizing? You don't gain anything until your itemized deductions exceed your standard deduction (which I think is pretty generous).

I claim a bunch of deductions. Just switched jobs and raised it to highest justifiable number I could think of. The less the government touches my cash, the better. If I ever owe them a little, I can pay them with the interest I haven't been giving them for free all these years :-)

Are we talking deductions, or exemptions?

Well, actually, I claim a lot of both. I itemize a lot of charitable giving in TurboTax. But, for the purpose of this topic, I meant to say exemptions.

Yes, we are talking exemptions, but everyone says deductions. Kind of a pet peeve of mine, too!

because i do have some deductions i believe but they're not that great, im pretty sure i can claim my cell phone bill, work boots/clothes, work gloves, and if i ever stay overnight at work depending on what city/state it's in i get a cost of living deduction (when i worked in chicago i believe it was about $50 a day).
However if standardized is that big of a claim already, im almost positive my claims wouldn't more than that.
