Teen Frugality

I read a similar article elsewhere, and what struck me was that many apparel stores were hailed by some as being "recession-proof", which I had serious doubts.... I guess it doesn't help that this soft market has lingered for so long, and is likely to be with us for a little while longer.
But in any case, I'm glad that frugality is "in" for teens... sort of.

That's definitely an encouraging trend. I'm glad to see that when circumstances demand it, they know how to cut back. Now if we can just get them to stick to the frugal ways when times are good and put money into savings, they'll be all set.Steve

* Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
* There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

funny, as a teen I always shopped in thrift stores. I thought that was normal. Then I read this line in the article:
Economists say this teen spending slump could be the worst in 17 years, when teen frugality led to the demise of once-hot Merry-Go-Round Enterprises Inc. and ushered in an era of flannel shirts and torn jeans.
Oops. I was one of those grunge teens in the 90s. Sorry merry go round!

It appears to be an encouraging trend but I think most teens shop at thrift stores for 2 reasons - it's trendy and it's the only way to buy anything unique. I think it's a good thing either way, I just don't think it's because teens are getting smarter with their money or that they have less of it.

I'd like to see some of our teen forum participants comment on whether say see frugality burgeoning among their agemates. I'm skeptical."There is some ontological doubt as to whether it may even be possible in principle to nail down these things in the universe we're given to study." --text msg from my kid
