Teens turn to thrift as jobs vanish and prices rise: Financial News - Yahoo! Finance

  • #2
I read a similar article elsewhere, and what struck me was that many apparel stores were hailed by some as being "recession-proof", which I had serious doubts.... I guess it doesn't help that this soft market has lingered for so long, and is likely to be with us for a little while longer.

But in any case, I'm glad that frugality is "in" for teens... sort of.

That's definitely an encouraging trend. I'm glad to see that when circumstances demand it, they know how to cut back. Now if we can just get them to stick to the frugal ways when times are good and put money into savings, they'll be all set.

funny, as a teen I always shopped in thrift stores. I thought that was normal. Then I read this line in the article:

Economists say this teen spending slump could be the worst in 17 years, when teen frugality led to the demise of once-hot Merry-Go-Round Enterprises Inc. and ushered in an era of flannel shirts and torn jeans.

Oops. I was one of those grunge teens in the 90s. Sorry merry go round!

It appears to be an encouraging trend but I think most teens shop at thrift stores for 2 reasons - it's trendy and it's the only way to buy anything unique. I think it's a good thing either way, I just don't think it's because teens are getting smarter with their money or that they have less of it.

Having been pregnant up until two weeks ago, I find that stealing the hubby's t-shirt is a solution to covering the belly...

Was Merry Go Round a mall store? I've never heard of it. I was pretty disconnected from all things mall 17 years ago. But if it was an icon of teenage outfitting I thought I would've heard of it, at least.

I'd like to see some of our teen forum participants comment on whether say see frugality burgeoning among their agemates. I'm skeptical.
