If you like to track it, you might consider a Wamu credit card. One of their cards will track your tranunion number once per month.

Why do you want to know your credit score? What information do you think you can learn from this number?

Don't pay any attention to your actual credit score. Just make sure you credit report is correct and free of errors. Dispute anything that is not correct.

Otherwise, spend your time earning more money, paying off debt (if any), save and invest, and enjoy your life.

Don't worry about the credit score. You can't control the score and it doesn't help if you try to game the system anyway.

Go to myfico.com and buy it there. That is the only place you can be sure of getting the actual FICO score. Each of the credit reporting bureaus generates a score but it is not the same as the FICO score.

You can sign up for one of those credit monitoring services that offer a credit score. Usually the first 30 days are free, and if you cancel within those 30 days, you won't have to pay anything.

I am applying for a mortage and wanted to know the score, to negotiate for a better interest rate

Keep in mind that the individual lender will generate their own credit score based on your credit profiles available from the three major credit bureaus.

So while the different scores may serve as a starting point, the scores themselves are not the end-all-be-all score your lender is using.

                FYI

When I called some mortgage lenders recently to get a pre-qualify on a mortgage, they checked all three scores and told it to me right over the phone.

So in your opinions, is it worth paying for a credit monitoring service? My bank offers 24/7 credit monitoring and ready access to my credit score (all through experian) for $5.50/month... I've considered it, but not sure how 'worth it' the service is.

IMO, no, unless you've had identitity theft problems in the past, and a constant need-to-know situation with your FICO score, there's no real reason to pay for this service.

I can understand wanting to know the score when looking to deal for a interest rate on a mortgage or car loan; but not otherwise. It's just not worth it to follow it. Every loan you get will use the number in a different manner. Plus Experian is just one company and the score is not the same as the myfico.com score.

If you monitor and dispute any errors cropping up on your free credit reports, then the number would not matter because there's not really a whole lot you can do to change it.

Stagger the reports from this website (ie. Get Experian one month, then 4 months later get your free report from another company, then 4 months later the next). They do not give you a score, but they do allow you to see what's on there and correct any errors.

All that came to mind with this thread was:

Well I was shopping for a new car, which one's me?
A cool convertible or an SUV.

Too bad I didn't know my credit was whacked,
cuz now I'm driving off the lot in a used sub-compact.

F-R-E-E, that spells "free," credit report dot com baby.
Saw their ads on my TV. Thought about goin' but was too lazy.

Now instead of lookin' fly and rollin' phat,
my legs are sticking to the vinyl and my posse's getting laughed at.
