  • Taxes done - BIG surprise - A refund!

We went to the accountant on Thursday to do our taxes. I was sure we would owe money this year, as we have the last few years. As you all know, I'm not a believer in lending the IRS money all year. I think a refund is a bad thing. I'd rather have the money in my pocket (or my account) where it is useful to me during the year. The past couple of months, I've been accumulating money intently for paying what I anticipated would be a $2,000+ tax bill.

Anyway, we got everything back from the accountant today. Between state and federal, we are getting back $3,036!! I have no idea how that happened. My accountant obviously does because he put a little post-it note on the return saying to call him about our federal and state withholding. He's not in today so I'll touch base with him on Monday.

Even though I try and plan not to get a refund, I certainly can't complain about getting an unexpected $3,000. This year, especially, since we are having our daughter's Bat Mitzvah in the fall and will be spending quite a bit of money for that celebration. The extra cash will certainly come in handy. So rather than spending at least $2,000, we'll end up ahead by $3,000. I guess that really puts us $5,000 ahead of where I anticipated being after taxes were done.

So that was our very pleasant surprise today.

    * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
    * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
    * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I'm not sure I would consider that a pleasant surprise, but it's always good to get money.

Well, not pleasant to know that we've overpaid all year, but pleasant to find out we're getting back 3K that is totally unexpected. The Roths will definitely get maxed out early this year.
