  • Thrift shop bargains today

    Score one for dad.

DD, who has never been on a ski slope in her life, is going on the youth group ski trip in a couple of weeks. She was in need of a decent ski jacket and ski pants for the trip. DW was trying to think of where to go: EMS, LL Bean, Dick's, etc. That just made me see $$$ going out the window. So I suggested the local thrift shop, at least for the jacket, because I know they usually have a good selection of jackets.

They were both willing, so off we went. As I thought, the jacket rack was filled with a very nice selection, including Columbia, LL Bean, Nike, Adidas, Starter and many other good quality name-brands. I found a Gerry jacket that DD really liked. It was marked $15.00 and had one of the color tags that was half off today, so it was $7.50. Then we looked for ski pants and they had those too. $3.00 and half off. So for a whopping $9.00, we got the coat and pants she needed.

The trip wasn't quite that cheap, though, because DD also found a denim jacket she really liked for spring. That was the most expensive item we bought - $10.00, but still far cheaper than buying a new one and she does look really cute in it.

So we spent a grand total of $19.00. I'm sure the pants alone would have been that much at the regular stores and the jacket would have been even more. Two points for dad.

That's great! I've got skiing family members and the gear can be expensive!

Nice effort sir. I also recommend buying outdoor gear online. (well, if you do the kind of stuff that requires better than average gear If you can control yourself and are patient in waiting for the gear you need to come up, Steep and Cheap: Oakley Halfpint Youth Sunglasses offers some wicked gear for at least 50% off.

I got an amazing moonstone softshell for $80 bucks. Original was $265.
