  • Developing A personal & Family Financial Plan

I've been considering my personal finances and our families financial position... The general considerations regarding money and networth are easy. But I've reached the conclusion it would be helpful to seek third party perspective for independent advice on the diretion "we" as a family take.

When I search the local yellow pages for differing consultants, I'm unable to find what I am seeking... financial planners appear to reflect investment/asset management professionals. A search under counseling yields phsychiatrists and psychologists,... But what I seek is someone who can help us evaluate our current financial position and offer opinion and advice... helping us develop a forward looking plan. I anticipate some personal conflict might come into the mix too. Two adults, kids, education considerations, careers, housing, community... multiple considerations need to be weighed and emotions will likely come into play.

Q? Any thoughts on where to look for such advice... Keywords; A specific profession; ...to help narrow my search?

    Thanks!!!

I would look at most accounting firms. Also look for CFP designation.

I think good financial planning can be learned quickly from a tax return, maybe look for a person who can do taxes, and also make other suggestions once April 15 passes.

You can go to Dave Ramsey's website and look for one of his elp's for your area.

I believe that is what a Certified Financial Planner does. I'd go that route. Stick with a fee-only planner, not one who works on a commission basis.

You can go to aicpa.org (CPA website) and look under "professional resources", "personal financial planning". There is a search for a CPA/financial planner by area.
