Very true. DW used to do cake decorating (still does occasionally). The supermarkets charge $20 for a really plainly decorated sheet cake and she wanted to charge $10 for an elaborately decorated custom cake. Most people she did cake jobs for insisted on paying her more, but she always felt guilty taking it. I kept showing her that bakeries charged $50 or more for the types of cakes she was making, but since she was primarily doing it for friends, she felt bad charging market rates, even though none of them ever felt bad paying an appropriate price.

I think many self-employed people undervalue their work and their time.

I agree completely Steve. My sister did the cake decorating (as a hobby) and made cakes for several people. It actually got so she had to stop it was SO time consuming forming icing flowers, etc. She is the type that wouldn't have the heart to charge appropriately either.
