  • SS from dead spouse

If an ex spouse gets SS from the death of the first spouse, are they entitled to get it from a second spouse also ?
    This probably sounds weird!
I am entitled to get money from the death of my first ex husband. I was married to him over ten years. I remarried, he didn't. He died a few years ago.
I don't know what his work history was. I know he paid into SS while I was with him, but he was a deadbeat when it came to child support so I don't know if he even paid into SS or lived underground for many years.

I am currently getting divorced from my second husband that I have been married to for almost 23 years.
Should he die before me I know even being divorced I could get SS payments, but if I take them from the first spouse, will I jeopardize my chances if I survive my second husband?
I know the seconds husband work history and it is very good.

According to the SSA Survivors Benefits page:
    What if I remarry?
Generally, you cannot get widow’s or widower’s benefits if you remarry before age 60. But remarriage after age 60 (or age 50 if you are disabled) will not prevent you from getting benefit payments based on your former spouse’s work. And at age 62 or older, you may get benefits based on your new spouse’s work, if those benefits would be higher.

You can only get it from one spouse.
