  • Great offer from Discover

DW and I both have Discover cards. We used to use them a lot years ago but then got better reward cards. The past couple of years, we've only used Discover when they were offering a 5% cashback bonus that we could use. My wife got her new card recently. About the same time, they started the 5% bonus for gas purchases. She also got a letter from them saying, "How come you haven't used your card for a while? We will give you $1 cashback on each of your next 20 purchases." Can't pass that up. 5% back on gas and $1 back on every purchase. We'll be on vacation next week and the 5% also includes museums so we'll be sure to use it for that, gas and a few other things until we've used it 20 times.

Awesome! Discover's 5% offers are great (loving 5% on gas right now).

Discover's 5% gas cashback also applies to car repairs. Just make sure you check your statement because they've missed it on mine for the last 3 repair bills (even though the name on the statement is "XXX Service Center" and Discover classified it as "automotive").

Discover recently sent me a notice with all the fine print which I usually throw away without reading, except this one caught my eye because it said the 5% cashback on gas will end in October '07 I think. Anyone else get this notice? I'm planning to call them and tell them I'm going to completely stop using the card if they drop the gas cashback because my other reward cards pay more.

5% cashback on gas is only offered from July through September. Discover changes the types of retailers eligible for the 5% cashback every 3 months. In October - December they will be offering 5% cashback on movies and restaurants, but you need to make sure you sign up for it. You can get more information here.

did they set a limit on the value of the purchase? otherwise you could just buy $1 items with your credit card and count them as free!

Problem with Discover is the lack of merchant acceptance.

Most merchants accept Discover now. I have used it as my primary CC and rarely run into a place that doesn't accept it. I think it used to be that way, but it has definitely changed.

Ok, may be worth a second look. Thanks.

I agree. Acceptance is pretty widespread now. I remember when it wasn't, though.

I remember one time we took my MIL to Disney World with us. For some reason, she decided to only bring one of her credit cards and picked Discover. She wasn't happy when we got there and she learned that Disney didn't take Discover. Why she picked that as the one to bring back then I have no idea. BTW, Disney does take it now.

Nope. No limit. Just $1 back on each of the next 20 purchases.
