  • Good/Bad experiences with Etrade checking and savings?

We're considering switching to Etrade checking and savings. The APY's are very competitive (about 3.25 and 5.05), they say they refund ATM fees, and it is FDIC insured. We have Etrade accounts for my husband's IRA and ROTH, so it would be nice to have the checking and savings with the same institution.

Does anyone here have experience with Etrade banking, good or bad?

I know someone who started with a company stock plan at E*TRADE and has since added the checking and savings. They have had no problems and like having all of the accounts together.

E*TRADE is particularly well-regarded for their security.

I think it is a good move, especially if you already have an account with them.

I personally am not a user but I did attempt to open an account with ETrade 6 months ago. Now, let me put a disclaimer that I am all in all used to online banking and the quickness of opening an account.
My disappointment came when I tried to open an account with ETrade, I went through the process online and gave my BOA account and routing number with an initial deposit of $25. Now, details are murky since its a a few months ; as far as what message they displayed to me after the confirmation or even the email , but i thought I had done everything successfully so waited a couple of days. It all was good when they deducted the $25 from my BOA account to. Mind you, this is the first high interest savings account i was opening when i started out my budget (apart from my BOA checking and their pathetic 0.86% savings).
I was all hoping that i should now see the money in my account and every day I would keep logging in my Etrade account to see if the money was deposited, but no luck ..

Then I rummage through my regular mail to see this huge packet from Etrade and apparently, it stated that I had to sign a form and send it across to them to open the account. Now this contradicted the claim (or whatever their marketing campaign said) about "open an account in minutes". Well, long story short, I was young and dumb back then ) and forgot to send the signed letter and Etrade is richer by $25.
The reason i felt frustrated was a.) I lost $25; b.) That was my foray in budgeting and savings and it sure didnt help my confidence; c.) I have since then managed to open savings account at ING, Wamu, HSBC and all were done in "minutes" without any form to sign.

Again, this is just my experience with 50% fault on my side for being lazy and i fall in the category of ppl who depend probably on internet being quick and easy. However, they should not claim "open in minutes".
