Well, my mom is in a little bit of trouble with the IRS. She owes past taxes that she didn't pay through her business. My mom won't discuss it with me, but I can tell it's going to be a lot. I have seen add's on TV where people have owed large amounts to the IRS and ended up settling. Does anyone know if those places can really help? Is it worth it? Any tips or ideas?

Re: Tax Question
I don't know the answer to your question - but, when we were on vacation last year in Mississippi these places were on the TV ads constantly. Here? I don't think I've ever seen a single ad! Weird.
If I were her I'd tread carefully though - seems like those companies could easily make promises that they might not be able to deliver.
Maybe some one with more experience in this area will venture along here with a more educated answer for you!!
Good luck to your Mom!!! Better to face it head on and get it over with!

Re: Tax Question
Yes there are legit attorneys out there that will help you negotiate a settlement with the IRS. However there are a lot of scam artists out there. I would shy away from any firm that guarantees results ("50% off your tax bill guaranteed!!") or claims to have secret ways of making debts disappear. Also you may want to check with your SAG and/or BBB.

Re: Tax Question
I agree with Sweeps - there are legitimate attorneys that deal with IRS settlements, but your mom will need to shop around. Your mom should meet with several tax attorneys and choose the one that she is the most comfortable with. Have your mom ask her CPA or current attorney for referrals; avoid the attorneys that advertise guaranteed results.
