According to ----me, No, you cannot go to prison for not paying your credit cards. There are no debtors prisons anymore, you cannot go to jail for not paying your bills. Unless you owe the IRS, that is.

If you write fraudulent checks, then you would be breaking the law and might be given jail time, but not for not paying.

Try to talk to your credit card companies and try get the interest stopped and set up a repayment plan.

Credit is a learning experience. Don't panic. Hold your head up high, support yourself, and just be careful. Best of luck.

For what it's worth, the only way you can land in jail is if you commit a crime that is classified misdemeanor or higher. That or if you're like some of the more enterprising women here, and walk up and ask for overnight accomodations.

You should tell your dear friend that there is no where she can go to escape. Wherever she goes, the creditors will find her. If it were as simple as running away, then no one would ever pay the credit card companies, and they wouldn't still be around. The only way to escape the cc companies is to come up with a very solid plan for debt elimination, and then impliment that plan. Action is the key here.

Simple answer.......No, you can't go to prision for not paying a debt. It's not a serious enough of an offense. You can lose all of your assets and have your credit history ruined, but you won't wind up in jail over it. Stealing someone's credit or intentionally defrauding a creditor, well that's a whole different story. Then it will depend on the amount of money involved. I would try to have a serious sit down with your friend. Running will not achieve anything. Just like anything else in life, you need to face your problems and troubles head on. You might not always come out on top, but it's the right thing to do. The honorable thing to do. Problems always have a way of being able to run just a little faster than you. They always seem to be waiting for you wherever you go.
