Spamming the blogs isn't cool, but I think this thread led to some interesting discussion.

I agree and that is why this thread has remained and his account hasn't been suspended. I'm not sure he did it on purpose - I think he was just overly excited to promote the pfd and went beyond what was acceptable. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt for now...

Agreed. Whether it was legite or not, it still got everyone talking, sharing ideas, opinions, and advice. And isn't that why we're all here?

This is rather funny, I have only now read this thread and all along I felt that Thomas was using the people here to test his text, then I get to the posts dealing with this. Think the people who offered very insightful critiques of his text should levy an evil fee for their work

I have a bit of a problem the way he's gone about this. First he titles it as "awesome" and pretends that it is someone else's work when it's his own. Why not just say that he has written this information about getting out of debt and would like everyone to review it?

He has been changing his writing from suggestions by the comments here (he also changed the information about kids and private / public schools), but not thanking people for helping him improve his writing. It would have been so much better if he would have said good point, I will change that than making all the changes in stealth (still pretending it isn't his) and not thanking people for pointing out weaknesses.

It really doesn't sit well with me, especially in this forum where everyone is friendly and gives their honest opinions openly.

Wow, did this thread take a twist over the weekend. I printed it out when I read it....hehee..must go back and see what has changed! But I still say it's one sided...

Yes, this guy is being pretty sleazy. Though at least he is changing stuff that isn't accurate or is misleading. It remains a very bizarre article with some rather strange ideas about personal finance.

Hmmmm, which is more egregious: passing off someone else's work as your own (copyright infringement), or passing off your own work as a third party's so you can test the waters?

Maybe we can all pretend that we are not on to him and lead his text into odd directions? It needs more religious overtones and anti-capitalist sentiment to trully qualify as an awesome pamphlet IMO.

Nothing at all wrong with wanting to bounce your ideas in a discussion forum, but man at least be upfront about it.

OH! He added a whole little section on savings! It basically said pay off debt first (it has a higher interest rate) and then save, excpt for a baby emergency fund....hum....sounds like what I hear around here! Still no mention of preparing for future costs or retirement.

I guess what they say is true -- there is no such thing as bad publicity.

I would have had no problem at all giving advice and opinions on his work had he been upfront and honest about it. But why try to lie and be deceptful about it? It doesn't make much sense. Unless he would have came on the forum and said "Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have this research paper due next week for my economics class. I was wondering if all of you could read it, suggest some changes and improvements, then I will steal all of your ideas as my own, take full credit, and be sure to get an A." If that were the case, then I can see why he would have lied. Even if he would've had some scenario like that going on, I still would have been willing to help him out as long as he was honest and upfront about the whole thing and promised not to rip off everyone elses ideas without giving them credit. Oh well, maybe he'll have better luck fooling people on some other forum.

gavin, he's posted it online too, and was even so, um, kind as to leave the web address in someone's blog as a comment. link to the comment is http://payingitoff.savingadvice.com/...#comment-26475
