  • Credit card unauthorized switch

My wife has had a MBNA Visa and Mastercard for 7 years. Bank of America bought out MBNA recently and guess what? We just found out that they took the initiative to switch BOTH of her cards to Bank of America/MBNA American Express cards without her permission. Seeing as I'm having a problem with BOA in the other thread about unsolicited credit cards I'm really not surprised about this. I would think that this is also illegal. She's got a different account number now (she's already cancelled both) and the user agreements are completely different. They have yet to send us a user agreement also. Anybody else run into this?

Yes, my MBNA Master Card changed to Bank of AMerica Visa card, total different number. And I have another two cards changed to Bank of America Card(one is fleet boston, the other one changed bank so many time, I forgot what it was originally with). I need two cancel one or two. Well, it is just saying BOA is becoming a huge shark...

When FirstUSA got bought by Bank One who got bought by Chase, I got new cards each time and at some point it changed from a Master Card to a Visa. Since just about everything stayed the same each time as far as the member agreement was concerned, I didn't care, but they didn't ask me first, just sent the new cards with new numbers.

Your credit card agreement undoubtably gives the credit card company the right to change ANY of the terms. If you don't like the changes, you have (less than) 15 days to let them know so they can cancel your account.

I have both a BOA and a MBNA cc. My MBNA has not been changed yet - I'll have to keep an eye on this. I don't really care to have two BOA cards. Thanks for the heads up.

I have an American Express Blue card (MBNA in disguise) and after I'd had it a couple of months the SOB's sent me a letter saying they had added a debit card 'feature' to my card and told me how thrilled I should be about it!!!

Here's how it works: I was supposed to call them and create a 4-digit PIN, after which I could use the Am Blue card as either a credit card or a debit card. When I used it as a debit card, Amex would pay it and imediately draft my checking account (at another bank!) for that amount. When I called to complain, they claimed I had requested this 'feature', but they did agree to deactivate it.

Because of that and similar incidents, I have not made any charges on that card since then and I never will. The only reason I still have it is because they offered me a very-low-interest balance transfer when I originally signed up for the card. I have no intention of paying that original balance transfer off until both of my higher-interest CCs are completely paid off, but as soon as I do pay it off the Amex card is history.

In my same call with the regional marketing manager in my other thread (unauthorized Bank of America credit card) I asked him about this switch. He said he had never heard of this and we should request a letter of explanation. He said that BOA may have discontinued its association with the organization on our card, but I told him the same organization is on the AMEX card as is on the former MC and Visa. He really didn't have an explanation.

Bumping this to say that I got a snail mail notification from BOA today that my MBNA card will be replaced with a BOA cc. Account number and PIN remain the same. Expiration date will change.

I have MBNA, had it since january 2004. It hasn't changed to BOA, number's still the same, but I can access my MBNA statement from my BOA online banking page.
