  • Got FIRED then I paid off a debt!!!

To make a long story short, I left my job of 5 years for a higher paying job, was there four months and things were looking "OK". But, I was paying off debt.

Then, they freaking FIRED me! Why? "I kept making mistakes".

So I said, "What mistakes? Tell me and I will make them right."

Them, "We're not interested in an argument."

So basically I didn't even get a chance to defend myself. When I interviewed, they mentioned all these "big" contracts coming. Well, I was there four months, no big contracts and they LOST an important client. They are a small company (I was employee number 7).

So I personally think they had an ego going.

So, I got fired Friday and by NEXT Friday, I was offered another job making $17,000 more a year than them! (TWICE what I made in my 5 year job).

What a fool I've been. Debt, debt, debt and not saving.

Ok, at my new job I am a contractor so technically I could be out of work tomorrow. But I think that is true just about anywhere these days. But thanks to the incresed salary, I paid off a $780 debt on our laptop!

Next month, I hope to pay off my AMEX and then on to my van.

I've been gone a while so thought I would share my story.

Anyone have something like what I've been through?

BTW, at the company that fired me, they haven't replaced me....so I guess they are working on those "big contracts" with fewer people. :-)

I was laid off from a job because the work just wasn't there to keep my position. It felt awful. It took me 4 months to find another job. You should be very thankful that you found a new job and for more pay.

I would just assume that the company had the problem and it wasn't about you. They were simply tacky in the way they handled it.

Good job paying off that debt. Aren't you glad you know smart things to do with that raise? Some people would just blow it.

Sounds like everything worked out in the end!

I know you must be aware of this, but do you have an emergency fund in case this job falls through as well?

Yes, that is very important. I feel much better knowing that I have an emergency fund that we could live on for quite some time. That should be your first priority!

Don't forget that if you are a contractor and not an employee, you may have to pay self-employment tax -- 16% right off the top for social security; some of that 17K should be set aside for that. If that's the case (which it may not be) also keep track of all your work related expenses, more of them may be deductible.

Good for you! We are looking at reductions at my current job. It will be an interesting 4th quarter. Could be me, could be my boss...who knows.
