One of the reasons I finally caved and got a cell phone is because all of my coworkers and managers communicated almost entirely by text. Most of my managers have been quite a bit older than me.
I don't think that lacking communication skills is anything new. I remember thinking that about the vast majority of my coworkers back in college. -
My co-workers often get annoyed at me because I don't have a smartphone. Oh well. Until my company is willing to pay for it, they will just have to call me. I actually can get texts on my standard cell phone, but it costs me extra so I avoid texting.Comment

I could have written this because I feel exactly the same! Plus, I had a Blackberry for years before early retiring, a ball and chain tether to work if you will, and I have absolutely no desire for a SmartPhone as a result. I 'get' the advantages, I'm just not willing to pay extra for them, or to be 'wired' in more ways than one, 24/7. We have $139 no-contract Kindle Fires that do a great job of giving us internet access whenever and wherever we find WiFi hot spots.
