  • Your personality type determines your paycheck

Upset that your paycheck isn't quite the size you'd like it to be? Ready to blame your company, the economy, Obama? Turns out you need to look a lot closer to home: in the mirror, specifically. A new study indicates that your personality, specifically how driven and results-oriented you are, has a significant impact on your earning potential.

Granted, this shouldn't be world-shattering news to you. But it's useful for understanding how our specific personality types map out against the demands of work. The study uses the famed Myers-Briggs Personality Test, which divides everyone into one of 16 personality types based on introversion/extroversion, rationality/emotion, and so forth...

    INFP Here!

Idealistic, loyal to their values and to people who are important to them. Want an external life that is congruent with their values. Curious, quick to see possibilities, can be catalysts for implementing ideas. Seek to understand people and to help them fulfill their potential. Adaptable, flexible, and accepting unless a value is threatened.

Sums me up pretty good, and knowing my strengths/weaknesses have helped me in my career.

I've taken the Myers-Briggs test multiple times over the years, and always typed as an INTJ -- the introverted mastermind. It's great sometimes, being the cold-hearted rationalist that quickly sees to the bottom of an issue (not to mention, it really helps when it comes to managing my finances)... But quite honestly, although normally I will proudly wear the "introvert" as a badge of honor, in our very extroverted society, most people just don't understand the way we (introverts) work, so it can be altogether frustrating dealing with the overpowering extroverts who need to have it their way.

        I am INFJ.

"introverted idealists? Man, you folks have it tough. Get out in the world or stop thinking everything's perfect, one of the two."

        LOL.

Though I heavily agree with the personality assessment and most of what it said about career, it also says the last thing I should do is data and numbers. HA! My passion for numbers seriously over-rides the INFJ in me.

I do also think that being so intuitive is very helpful in picking the *right* jobs. & also in dealing with people. This has been a huge asset in the workforce.

        From an INFJ career link:

"INFJs should also be aware of their tendency to pick career goals that are way too humble. People with this personality type tend to do very well in supporting roles, but they should seek something more"

I am very well aware of this. Was the first thing that came to mind when I saw my personality type was on the lower end of the pay scale. I've resolved this with just embracing middle ground. I've pushed myself to aim a little higher than I would be naturally inclined to. Other than that, it's not money or career or ambition that makes me tick and I am okay with that too.

Underachieving INTJ, but I've softened to become someone who freely uses smilies, so I'd like to put an asterisk on my classification.
