Where I live the minimum wage is $10.55/hour. I can't think of a single business that's installed robots to get around it.

Unfortunately, fast food work is prime for teens and part-timers, so employees don't have a ton of leverage when it comes to asking for more compensation. It's not like a grill jockey or register operator with 10 years experience is much different, production-wise, than a teen with ambition and focus who is willing to work for minimum wage and no extras.

The companies themselves probably don't see a lot of ROI from paying their employees more. Is paying 50% more going to bring in more customers, or move more nuggets, or make the stock price go up?

If the money comes from the company's profits, this means the stock prices will probably take a hit, perceived by many as a Bad Move. If the money comes from raising the prices of the food, then customers will go to a restaurant that decided not to pay their employees more, and can offer lower prices; ironically, those restaurants will end up doing better.

It is a horrible situation to be in, and looking at it should be motivation enough to stay away from this line of work unless you are a teen or use it to supplement a full time gig.
