I think it depends on how it's purposed. Many universities are starting to move toward digital textbooks, in which case a tablet is far superior than either a phone or laptop. But the point is still valid that you can't very well compose a research paper on a tablet. At least for me, I typically write academic papers while multi-tasking at least a dozen PDF files or internet windows of source material. Tablets simply can't handle that level of multi-tasking very well, let alone the already-stated problems with typing a significant amount on them.
