  • 7-time Lotto winner shares his secrets

It's always disappointing when I read articles that claim that people should play the lotto for any other reason than enetertainment...

...So how did Lustig beat the odds? For one, you have to stick to it—treat it like a job, he says. “Anything in life that’s really worth acquiring takes time and effort. And people need to look at lottery that way,” he says. “They are crazy not to.”

Second, pick your own numbers—don’t let the computer do it, he adds, and play the same numbers every time. “The reason why you should play the same numbers is because your odds become better every time you play them. Not much ... but every little bit helps,” he says.

Third, he says, set a budget and don’t get into trouble. “I tell people, don’t spend grocery money, don’t spend rent money. Figure out what you can afford to spend.”

The Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots are topping $2 billion combined. Richard Lustig, a seven-time lotto winner who wrote a book on the subject, shares his tips for making the most of your $2 bet.

Gah. No, dude, the odds of any particular set of numbers coming up is exactly the same.

I saw a Powerball simulator... The average person, playing the lottery twice a week, should win the jackpot once every 1,684,841 years on average.

Well this statement pretty much proves his ignorance. He obviously failed Statistics class.

Every lottery drawing is an independent event. The outcome of today's drawing is in no way influenced by the outcome of yesterday's drawing and will in no way influence the outcome of tomorrow's drawing. Playing the same numbers each time does absolutely nothing to improve your odds over time. Whatever numbers you pick (or the computer picks) have the exact same odds of coming out each and every drawing. It doesn't matter if they have never won or they've won multiple times.
