Interesting conflict. I should think that Disney would be grateful that anybody would watch that turkey, John Carter, as a rental. Can't imagine anyone actually buying the DVD.

I think the movie studios need to accept the fact that they're business model is obsolete. Rather than battling technology, they need to embrace it. I don't remember the stat but the sales of DVD/BlueRay discs was down last year and streaming and downloading was up. People aren't buying discs anymore like they did even 3 or 4 years ago.

The same thing that happened in the music industry is now happening in the film industry. I couldn't tell you when we last bought a CD but we've bought music within the past month.

My daughter watches a number of shows online, as do I. A couple of weeks ago, she came to me and said she had searched every site she could find for a particular show and it just wasn't out there anywhere for free. She wanted permission to buy it from iTunes or Amazon. (She was going to pay for it but she doesn't make online purchases without my permission.) I told her to go ahead and buy it. I know she loves the show and I trusted that she searched all of the legitimate (not pirated) sites. The alternative would have been to purchase the series on DVD but that option never even crossed her mind. She doesn't need to own a physical copy. She just wants to see it and is perfectly happy watching it on our beautiful hi-res computer monitor.

The studios need to figure out how to make money in the new world.
