New technology and an increasingly globalized world have changed the game. The kind of system we had just after WW2 with most of the industrialized world in ruins and the US the leader in virtually every field is not going to return.

I think new tech etc. will lift all living standards over time, assuming we do not destroy ourselves before then, but it is a new reality and there is no going back regardless.
