  • 76% Think They Should Save More Money

    With holiday shopping off to a strong start and Americans expected to spend an average of nearly $750 on gifts this season, money will be an issue with many of them. According to a new survey from Bank of America and conducted by Harris Interactive, 76% of U.S. adults don't think they save as much money as they should.

    The survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults found the following information:

    - 89% of adults do not have a separate account where they save money for holiday shopping.

    - 68% of adults place their spare change in a change jar or piggy bank.

    - 82% of adults have a savings account of some type, but less than 64% saved money in the past year.

    - 98% of adults regularly take measures to save money. these include:
    * making meals at home instead of eating out (76%),
    * conserving energy (73%)
    * waiting for items to go on sale before purchasing (69%).

    - 92% of adults save spare change, but only 66% of them do so specifically as a means of saving money. They typically think they could save just over $100 (median = $103) just by saving their spare change over one year.

    - 33% of adults regularly transfer funds from an account into their savings account.

    Re: 76% Think They Should Save More Money

    Saving change wouldn't net me much. I rarely use cash. Maybe once/month. So, I'd save less than $12/year.

    What I do use, is rewards cards. With those, I make/save more than $100/year.
