Interesting article on the use of coupons and how some folks still will buy the item at full price if the coupon doesn't work:
How to avoid the coupon pitfall that costs most shoppers
A few years ago when I still thought Wal-mart was reasonable on EVERYTHING (I don't anymore), I brought my weekly groceries and had a fistful of coupons. The cashier scanned them and nothing came off the bill. I pointed that out and she said she didn't have time to scan them again. I told her I didn't have time to shop there if my coupons didn't work. It became a big mess because I had to go the service desk and have everything rung up again and then the coupons had to be manually typed in for me to get my savings. I bet most folks (Not Savingadvice folks) would have just paid the bill and went on.
