  • Low Wage Earners Are Often Cheated

Low-wage workers are routinely denied proper overtime pay and are often paid less than the minimum wage, according to a new study based on a survey of workers in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago.

The study, the most comprehensive examination of wage-law violations in a decade, also found that 68 percent of the workers interviewed had experienced at least one pay-related violation in the previous work week...

Not surprised in the least, from my high school/college minimum wage days!

I was never quite sure why Wal MArt was the poster child for treating low wage employees unfairly. Perhaps it is warranted, but I always felt like a lot of other big companies just got away with more.

Most surprising to me: Worker's comp paid for treatment for only 6% of workers injured.

When I was earning minimum wage, I did not know my rights in regard to worker's compensation.

Not surprised by that article. Like Monkeymama I knew plenty of other companies who treated their workers poorly. Never worked off the clock but knew plenty of coworker injuries that were never dealt with through worker's comp.

Having been one of those low wage earners years ago, I can tell you one thing that compelled me to keep my mouth shut was the fear of losing my job.

One thing people are saying with low wage jobs and Workmens Comp. As much as you think its unfair and that no one made you aware. There are alot of employees working in retail that start a job just to get purpousley injured on the Job. This is costing companys alot more then people think. Companies are spending alot more on better security cameras beacuse of this.
