hahaha great.... the one university I specifically want my Master's from, and it's the 2nd most expensive in the country.... bah, just my luck.... hahahaha
I have noticed for a long while that in California the public education is very affordable, coupled with the fact that there aren't a lot of expensive private schools (compared to the East Coast anyway). It's not like public school grads compete with a lot of private school grads here. (In my industry and field, in general, public, bachelor's education is preferred. Though in other states a private Masters degree may be preferred, in the same job).
I am extremely curious why BYU grads(& Utah in general) has such a low debt load. Is it a Mormon culture thing? Interesting.
MonkeyMama, from what I have seen, LDS are very concerned with financial responsibility at a personal and family level.

I'm LDS, and Joan is correct -- our church does strongly encourage personal (/financial) responsibility, so that very well may have an impact. Also, BYU in particular offers a significant amount of financial aid to students, which makes the entire college experience more affordable. Lastly, the cost of living in Utah is pretty reasonable....I believe it tends to stick around or just below the national averages.
