For Sherrie Muldoon, the credit card debt was $46,244.

But the relief she felt after paying it off was priceless.

The couple had been paying the debt for three years and seven months, Muldoon told CNN, adding that the last payment they made recently was for $1,500.

"When we mailed that last check ... I sat down in the car, I looked over to my husband and I just burst out into tears," she said.

For a long time I have dreamed that when my mortgage is paid off I am going to have a huge party. I'll use the equivalent of one to two months worth of what would be a mortgage payment and I'm going to throw a big bash: live music, great food, the works.

I'm definitely having a party when the mortgage is gone. There are a lot of us in my area who do the Dave Ramsey plan almost religiously, so it's a sort of race to see who can get done the fastest. I feel bad when my poker buddy tells me how he's doing - but then again, he's 57, never been married, and no kids. So I imagine it would be difficult to not be doing well financially, but I think I'd rather have a family.
