[The] relationship between optimism and hard work has been lost in some quarters, thanks in part to the self-esteem movement, which gave everyone a trophy regardless of his or her effort.
So many of our schools are now going to the attitude that a child isn't to have an "F" on a report card because we can't say a child failed. Of course that child didn't turn in a shred of homework and refused to participate in any type of class activity, but we can't fail him...a perfect example of what this article is talking about.
So true. I know many people who expect to be rewarded just for breathing. Any work they actually manage to do (no matter how half-a**ed it is) is to be praised and be given top marks.
