A second day of a field gleaning Sunday at a Platteville area farm has been canceled because an unexpected crowd of 40,000 people picked the farm clean a day before.

Chris Miller says they expected between 5,000 to 10,000 people to show up Saturday to collect free potatoes, carrots and leeks left in the field after harvesting. Instead, cars snaked around cornfields and backed up more than two miles.

About 30 acres of the 600 acre farm about 37 miles north of Denver became a parking lot....

Our newspaper also ran this article and I believe it is true...so many are looking for food that is free or cheap.

The other day one of our third graders announced he was always hungry. It wasn't a typical kid who has growing pains -- he just said that there isn't enough food at his meals. He and his mom rely on the free lunch/free breakfast at school for two of his main meals. And this gal works, but she's a typical example of the working poor. We made "Stone Soup" in class and this little guy (and he's little, too) had three bowls of it!
