Restaurants, which have been slumping for two years because of a slew of short-term factors, are waking up to a worrisome long-term trend: The number of harried working moms isn't growing the way it was.
I rarely eat out at restaurants for several reasons, including:
* Portion sizes are huge= expensive
* Having to tip 20% on top of expensive food
and it's interesting that the restaurants are trying to attract more moms with kids, because as a non-parent this is another big reason I don't like restaurants--- it's often hard to enjoy my company and food with whining and banging that kids make! So, it's easier for me to stay home and cook food that I know will be healthy...
i am not an at home mom but when i went back to work I decided I was not doing it to support the restaurant industry, I always have easy meals on hand, if I do not feel like cooking I cook any way ;-)
I'm a harried, working full time mom who has mastered the art of preparing stuff on the weekend to combat the attraction of take-out. It's expensive and down right unhealthy!
My husband is the on that stays home, but yeah, we haven't supported the restaurant industry much since halfing our income.
Of course, I agree with Sally heavily. Beyond that the restaurants are so jam packed with people we find we no longer enjoy it anyway (though it is slowing down a bit lately).
The funny thing is most of my SAHM friends eat out every night. It depends on the region I guess. This is certainly restuarant central, and we feel quite odd being the ones to eat at home 99% of the time. I am appalled at the way some of my friends feed their kids. (Like throw them a hot dog at 10pm because they were too busy to make dinner, and forgot to feed them, stuff like that). I'm not a big health nut, but making time to feed your kids (talking TODDLERS here) a proper meal doesn't seem too much to ask either.
So I REALLY appreciate the way my husband puts a priority on dinner.
Did I read that right? The average American eats 207 meals a year at a restaurant? I know many people eat out often, but didn't realize it was that high. Where do people find the money to eat out that often? I'd spend more on food than mortgage in that scenario.
My DH and I went to TGIFridays for the first time in years the other day and I was extremely disappointed with the food. I wanted a hamburger but could only get it medium-well or well-done. I didn't want a hockey puck for lunch. My DH did order a hamburger and it tasted like it was warmed under a warming light. A complete waste of $30.00. The manager was surprised by our disappointment. He gave us 2 complimentary appetizers at our next visit - does he really think that we will visit again?
We've drastically reduced our eating out, and saved a ton of money in the process. But the ironic thing I've found is we save a lot of time too. If you eat out, you have to pack the kids up, drive back and forth, wait forever for slow service, etc. That kills a whole evening.
McDonald's or Burger King drive-thru might save some time, but sitting down at Bennigan's or Olive Garden won't save time.

Undercooked hamburger is dangerous. I would send my hamburger back if it wasn't cooked all the way through. Here in Canada there is no such thing as ordering your burger cooked a certain way - the internal temperature has to reach a certain point to kill off any bacteria that may be in the meat. If I want something rare or medium rare I'll stick with a steak (where the bacteria would all be surface - not ground in - and is easily killed by searing the outside of the meat. Lots of people have died from e coli eating undercooked hamburger.
