  • Military Personnel Can Get Free Tax Help

Military personnel and their families that have questions about their taxes or need help filing can get free help at special locations on their bases. They are eligible to get free tax help through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. VITA works with the Armed Forces Tax Council (AFTC) and the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard coordinate their services and overseeing military tax programs worldwide.

Marines, airmen, soldiers, sailors, and guardsmen, and their families worldwide can get free tax advice, preparation and assistance at offices within their installations. The VITA tax volunteers are trained to address military specific tax issues, such as combat zone tax benefits.

Most service members can file their tax returns electronically at their tax centers and, by selecting direct deposit, receive their refunds in as little as one week.
