Tip Jars - What's Up With Them?

Am I alone in taking pointed notice of all the tip jars that have blossomed on business countertops? From delis to pizzerias, Chinese takeout joints to barbershops, the word has spread like wildfire: If you put out a tip jar, people will fill it.

Yup, I've noticed. At a few places I've even seen the cashier shake the tip jar as they hand you back your change. Unreal.

Ooh, that's obnoxious, sweeps (the people who shake tip jars, not you!). I have noticed them too, but I ignore them without guilt. Like the article said, if I have to walk up, order, and carry my food or purchases, I will not tip. For waiters, delivery people, etc. I most certainly will because they are paid with the assumption of receiving tips to supplement their wages. Deli and pizza workers are not.

I agree with everyone above. I tip waitresses, delivery people, etc. only. If I'm at the supermarket and get exceptional service I'll say something to the supervisor or manager-in the end, that will be more beneficial to the employee than a few dollars in tips a day.

Dunkin Donuts all have the tip jars and I noticed the cashiers always hand your change to you over the tip jar. It also seem like they are trying to make the change fall out of your hand into the jar.

If it falls in I'm digging it back out,, lol

I find them incredibly irritating and I will avoid the businesses that have truly obnoxious ones.

If you bring something to me or perform a service for me, I'm more than happy to tip for good service. But I'm sure as heck not giving money to someone for the "favor" of preparing and handing me what I purchased. The whole thing just chaps my hide!

I think they are offensive and rude. Tips are for people providing a service like a waitress, pizza delivery, hair dresser, etc. I don't tip the person who hands me a donut or big mac. Sheesh. I really don't think they belong in counter service establishments.

There aren't many tip jars in my world. The coffee shops are the only places I can think of. I don't get out that much, so maybe I've just not been in the right places. People literally shake the jars? How crude.
