Here! Here! I couldn't agree with you more. Trying to deal with abused kids in a traditional classroom simply doesn't work. You spend your time on crowd control. Anyone who has had to control 13, 14, 15 year old teenagers who are angry with school sure knows what hard work is.

I guess that's why I love taking seminars so much. You get to work with people who want to learn. The questions they ask are real and challenging. The answers you have to give need to be thought through and precise. I suppose I'm still a teacher.

You know with the kids and having to really call in sick so much I haven't really done that in a while. Oh yeah and the whole taking months off for maternity leave - twice in the last couple of years.

But I am all for it. I Would say on average before I had kids I would call in sick to work 2 days a year for no reason. In my responsible way it would be of course be a day when I knew it would be slow and worthless. My old job just had PTO - it wasn't separated. but still something about spontaneously taking a day off that feels so good and rejuvenating. You can't just call at the last minute and say you are taking the day off - still had to use the sick ruse I guess. Though overall as long as you don't abuse it my current boss doesn't really care either. So I show up and do all my work, so what if I take a couple of extra days off. I have a pretty swell boss, doesn't treat me like a child. But I still need a day once in a while just to be spontaneous.

Well, it is much better to have a sick day when you aren't in good shape than go to work, pretend that you are working, make a mess and then go home.

I had difficult times explaining to a former boss of mine that when one is exhausted, he or she performs so badly that it takes more time to repair the damage later, than to postpone the task for a day or two. He just thought that by putting more pressure on us, he can squeeze better results but actually the only results were that the number of people who left the company went on the rise.

I got my MAT in education a few years ago since I loved school, college, am a born teacher, worked at musuems for years with school groups, and I enjoy helping dad with his classes. However I quickly found it's completely different on the other side of the desk and while I was good at it, it wasn't the calling I expected it to be. When I subbed for my dad's special ed classes, I loved the smaller classes, however they had their share of different problems too. I subbed for a year afterward but now just tutor.

Maybe elemetry would have suited me better, or a private school, but right now I'm looking for full-time work and feeling happy about my choice not to teach.

I wasn't quite threatened in the direct way that you were, however my dad and I could share some stories.

If anyone wants help with history feel free to email.

One interesting thing I find about myself is that I still love the challenge of teaching and working with people.

These days it's mostly in seminars. There is nothing so challenging, exciting and stimulating than seminar speaking where you have an audience that wants to know the information you're delivering.

Sometimes there's almost an electricity that develops when you have a large interactive audience and they're asking challenging and meaningful questions.

You come out of a 90 minute session absolutely drenched with sweat and totally exhausted. For people who think that talking with large audiences is easy, it isn't. Compared to teaching students who don't want to learn however it is an absolute pleasure.

Well I don't need to take sickies from seminars.

I got a lot of that same satisfaction by working at a museum talking to thousands of visitors a year. For a long time it was part of the reason I thought I'd go into teaching as well. I enjoy public speaking and would do it more often but in our depressed area, economically, they're aren't a lot of opportunities right now.

I hope the opportunities open up for you in the near future.

The Budget Man. Your profession is inspiring. I have a brother-in-law that lives with us and he teaches 2nd grade in a very depressed area. This is his first year of teaching. He has suspended 6 students to date, and one has tried the same trick with scissors. It is very sad the things that these kids are doing in 2nd grade!

Sometimes I call in "sick of work"; however, in the past year I only find myself "sick of work" because there are only so many hours of boredom that I can take. i've addressed my boredom with my boss, and it has improved with a new project but once that is over I hope I am not in the same position again.
