I came to the site too late to participate, but I've done something similar.
This site is a wonderful gift, even if you just use it to hold yourself responsible for reporting and completing your goals!
I would suggest a 6 mo or 12 mo. challenge is great, but with monthly or quarterly milestones. Similar to a business plan, or basic project management, where you set down a basic plan, manage yourself against it to see how you are doing, and update and take corrective actions periodically.
I think if you do a prize it would be cool if it could be voted on by other members, coolest challenge idea or most dedication or something. (and I sooooo need more TIME!)
I didn't catch the challenge at the beginning, and $5000 sounded like too big a goal, so I skipped it for 2005. Actually, I kind of forgot about it until someone mentioned it in their journal recently. I'd like to see what I can do next year, starting with the $20, but I won't be going for a specific goal.
Hope this isn't cheating, but once I get a bug in my ear.... I went ahead and ordered a can crusher from Ace Hardware. Turning aluminum cans in for cash is something I've been thinking about for a long time, but have never gotten around to. By the time the crusher actually gets here and DH puts it up for me, believe me it will be into 2006!
The pro-rated cost of the crusher is $17.24, after adjusting for another item in my order, a coupon, and sales tax. So that leaves me $2.76 for Ebay fees or postage or something. I'll wait til January for that, I promise!
Cans are a gread idea, i used to do them when i was little. But when i brought over 50 lbs to the recycling center and I walked away with 13 dollars and change, I'd given up on that one!
Some places (usually junk yards) also will pay for copper, lead, brass and other metals. These are all pretty easy to collect and will keep in your garage or cellar until you have enough to turn in.
I'm curious about something... starting January 1st, we're all starting back at $20, right? That's going to be a little tough... because I know for myself, I finally got up to an amount that I can invest in stuff... which today I am hoping to go out and do. I plan on spending between $50-75 today on items to list on Ebay and on my website. Mind you, hopefully most of them will sell before the end of the year, but if they don't, how do I go about counting them in the New Year? Do I just start out with $20 worth of them? Or would I count them as items I already have around the house?
It will be interesting to see how some of the current challengers will do in the New Year... as some of our ideas we cannot do again, like some of the signup bonuses... which the new challengers will still be able to do.
And what about those who invested in stocks, who will get profits on the money they already invested... will they be counting that as well?
I have a few ideas I want to try out, but as it's already so late in the year, I'm wondering whether I should just keep them for next year's challenge?
So are we just pretending this year's challenge is nonexistent and starting with a clean slate and $20 in hand?
This sounds great, but I know I've made about 1300 CDN last year, from making a website and building traffic. Mostly Google Adsense and similar things. However, why isn't there a Sharebuilder for Canada, I'd so love to do that. Nothing like that here. I don't think it counts website wise because, I only spent 10.00 CDN.
