I think the speculation part is not really comparing apples to apples.

BC/Eth= Maybe it'll go higher because some other sucker is willing to pay more for these digital nonsense than I did yesterday.

    Vs.

Maybe this company's stock will go higher because they have good management and their product is solid and disruptive.

Two wildly different train of thought.

Value is given because someone believes in its value. Since stocks are traded like ebay bids, these currency is worth as much as whoever is willing to pay for them based on the thinking that it'll worth even more.

I respect both of your guys' opinions. Heck, I have learned a lot over the years from both so I will concede that you are probably right for the most part, but I do have a feeling you guys dont really understand the underlying technology and what it is already used for, or the potential.

Nobody here really covers this (very alternative) investment so I am just giving my two cents... Im certainly NOT suggesting anyone to invest more than they would feel comfortable. This is just another option that has actually done quite well for me. So much so that I have already pulled out (almost) all of my original investment $. putting skin back in on some of the bigger dips.

No disagreement here. I know next to nothing about this topic. I keep meaning to read up on it and educate myself but I just haven't yet.

It's just that anytime you see the value of something wildly fluctuating for no apparent reason, you can't help but question what's going on.

            Currently BTC ~2000/ea

ETH should enjoy a good bump as well... ETH: ~165/ea
(The above was posted on July 17th)

(BTC) Bitcoin has spiked to around 3500/ea
            (ETH) Ethereum is at 275/ea

(LTC) Litecoin is 45/ea and has surprisingly been relatively the most stable of the three but I have sold all of my LTC. I dont really see the point to LTC, especially after Bitcoin Cash (BCC) has been created from the recent "hard fork". (Bitcoin Cash is meh.) LTC was redundant to begin with IMO, and now with Bitcoin Cash its even more redundant.

IMO alt-coin (sometime referred to as "shi+-coin") should be avoided entirely. Just holding BTC and ETH myself. If you want to get adventurous in the already adventurous world of cryptocurrency, I would look into DASH or Monero.

I have predicted in the past, even on here, that cryptocurrency will one day be the currency of the future, and speculation into various types of it has been on the rise, especially Etherium these days.

This is to be expected. Cryptocurrency simply works better as a form of (digital) fiat currency, and some find the fact that it can not be controlled or manipulated by any centralized government deepens its appeal.

I don't necessarily agree with the latter, but as cryptocurrencies start to gain visibility and popularity, it is only a matter of time, somewhere in the near future, that they will eventually gain mainstream acceptance and become a dominant force on the global economic stage.

The question, the same question that I posed in the past, isn't whether or not cryptocurrency will become popular and accepted one day. The real question is which one? No doubt, many early adopters are making bank but it is also still not without its great risks, in both exchanges and making the right bet on which of those currencies will ultimately win out. Will be bitcoin? Etherium? Litecoin? Or my personal favorite, dogecoins? (Haha, please don't harp me about the last one. That was suppose to be a joke.)

disagree in that governments will never allow the control of money (and therefore the people) to be taken from them

Well, I certainly can understand this sentiment, and I fully agree that most governments will resist this trend, probably to the bitter end.

However, what's already been happening though, is that people are accepting and using Bitcoins, for example, for international business transactions on the global market. Granted, cryptocurrency is still in its infancy and is more influential in the fringes of the dark net than anything, but imagine a token digital currency that is already in use, right now, where you can buy just about anything online, from pretty much any country, without having to worry about exchange rates or even know what their conventional currency is.

Imagine an international Amazon.com, using this universal digital currency, that is even more reliable than our current system of credit cards and debit cards, but make global transactions just as quickly and easily. This is the potential of cryptocurrency, and it's not anything any government should ignore for too long.... This can be a total game-changer, and whoever can step up and monitor/control this new global currency stands to become arguably the most powerful financial institution in the later half of the 21st century... or perhaps sooner?

Again, this evolution is already happening, with or without any government consent. It has the potential to leap-frog all traditional fiat currency, really. In my mind, cryptocurrency is inevitable. It's the currency equivalent of the Internet going global and mainstream.

But for right now, it is indeed very speculative. I mean just because I think some kind of cryptocurrency will become a dominant financial force some day, does not mean I know exactly which one of these cryptos will eventually be crowned as the king. It's also entirely possible that there may be several different cryptocurrencies that will be accepted and used concurrently, at any one time.

There is also nothing stopping any countries, particular world superpowers such as the US or EU or whoever else to create their own cryptocurrency algorithms, and integrating that with their own paper currency. Think of it like an upgraded serial number on steroids. This also makes their printed money very difficult to counterfeit. Of course, they will also get to control said algorithm, rather than end up being controlled by it. So, if a government is forward-thinking enough to take this bull by the horn, it's not without its benefits.

Or, as you say, it may never be accepted. Who knows? Only time will tell on this one.

Almost no point in making periodic updates on prices here as anyone who is willing to invest in crypto currencies can easily check market values on sites like coinmarketcap.com .

I hope at least one person took my unsolicited advice on buying at ~2000 /BTC in the middle of July.

BTC is at 4600 now. On the fence as to whether I wanna stay in this one at current prices... May be time to realize some 400% gains. Started dollar cost averaging in at $700!!

If I had 400% gains in a highly speculative investment, I would take my money and run. Don't get greedy. That's a damn nice profit. Don't wait for the bubble to burst.
