I did my mega backdoor Roth for last year's after tax 401k contributions. $16,100 after tax went into the Roth. Then another $1400 in earnings (pre-tax) went in. I opted to put the pre-tax into the Roth and pay the taxes now vs. rolling it into a TIRA just to avoid the pro-rata rule. So in 2016, I put $12k into me and my wife's backdoor Roths and the additional $17.5k for the mega backdoor for a total of $29.5k into Roth IRA's last year. Should see about the same this year.
Based on my retirement calculations, this will not need to be touched unless the market tanks the day I retire, so this will all sit there in the Roth growing tax free until the kids get it.
Life is good.
