I've never panned for gold but it looks like fun. I used to have the Outdoor channel and watched Gold Fever starring Tom Masey a lot. He doesn't have a large operation. He usually goes out with his daughter Kia (maybe 18 years old) and they either swing a metal detector or pans for gold and they produce some nice finds. Tom possesses a great deal of knowledge about where to go panning and I can really sense the passion and love that he has for gold panning.

My understanding is even after you find a few flecks of gold, you pay to get a cool little bottle to put it in and then set it on your bookshelf.
Is there a place you can actually sell the flecks?
My father in law is an inventor and loves to gold dredge. He'll never make money with it, but selling plans for his compact backpacking dredge could probably turn a profit. The only problem is he's convinced no one else could make it (hand made parts/tools etc). More than that, I'd never get him to write it out or help me write it out.-Milly

ebay.
aside from that, nobody will bother with your flecks of gold. If you had a bunch of it, or even a bunch of scrap gold, you could sell it to a refiner, which would pay you 90% - 98% of gold content, depending. They usually have minimums, which are somewhere between 3-10 ounces. all depends as I mentioned.
