    I'm really confused when some say living on 80 % of your prereitement needs. Are they talking about gross or net.

    I'd say they're referring to your expenses. So if you currently live on $50,000/year, the theory is you can get by on $40,000/year in retirement. I'm not sure I agree but that's the idea.

      It's got to be net since it could becoming from untaxable sources.
