hello all. just joined. i am an investing newbie. not sure where to invest my money. on a scale of 1-10 (1=conservative, 10=aggressive), I would say im about a 4.

i'm sure there are previous threads - if one can guide me that would be great!

i was thinking of putting about 30% into a S&P 500 index and 50% into US gov treasury bonds. a conservative friend said just do CDs.

it seems i can do the above myself to avoid a middleman cut (is this stupid to try?)

    thx everybody!

How old are you? Income? Total assets and debts? Years till retirement?

We'll need more info to answer.

Investment can definitely be DIY and I suggest taking one step at a time. bj584 has explained if you are willing to offer some details we can help with unbiased suggestions. If you are employed, does your employer offer a retirement plan? Are there any matching funds offered? This is free money demanding attention.

Is the money in a 401K? An IRA? A taxable investment account? DO you have an account?

        More info, please...

Give me more information about your assets and debts. No, it's not stupid to try all with yourself only without a middleman. And my suggestion is also like your friend just do CD's.
