When it comes to investing in mutual funds, everyone wants to find the best ones available. Your purpose in selecting mutual funds should not be to pursuit performance, but rather to participate in the stock market, bond market and money market. First, focus on the type of fund that fits your goals, and what percent of your assets you want to allocate to it. Your basic fund types are stock funds, bond funds, money market funds, and balanced funds.

Have a sizeable amount of money within the following funds, that are sitting in each respective money market to weather the current onslaught of the market, my broker suggested maybe looking at the following.
I am 24 and can withstand volatility but dont want to loose my ass, and keep a stable steady growth profile till we get out of all this funk.

I can move my money from the money market back into this class of funds no charge
          Columbia Funds
          DWS Scudder Funds
          Hartford Mutual
Any recommendations I have a conference call with him Thursday to just keep them in MM or roll them back into some funds. Thanks in advance.

Am N American based and unfamiliar with Nigerian rules. Canada is a basket case.
Hartford reads Insurance and that is not positive for equities. Scudder reads recent ownership by Deutsche Bank [2014] and European equities have problems. The strongest equity market is USA at present but 2016 is an election year and likely volatile.

Suggest starting with questionnaire to determine your Risk Ratio. 2nd, know what you are paying in fees, broker, load, and Management Expenses for Mutual Funds whether profitable or not. Important to work out a financial plan 5 years out and measure Net Worth at least annually.

              1. Start early and stay invested
              2. Decide on the mix of asset classes: If you are investing for the long term, go for equity. If for the short term invest in debt. For most people the investing duration is 30-40 years.
              3. Decide on a portfolio of mutual funds. Not more than 5.
              4. Review your portfolio periodically - say once a year. Stay invested but move money to another fund if it's track record is better.
              5. Make sure you use an objective criteria for assessing performance. Look at consistency of performance net of expenses.
