  • Good Alternative Investments?

Does anyone invest in alternative investments? Something that is not considered a standard investment? If you do, how did you get involved in it and is it something that anyone could do, or do you need a special skill set to be successful at it?

I'm not sure if tis is what you are talking about, but I buy art. Not the million dollar stuff, but art that might be worth a couple thousands dollars that I find at Goodwill, Estate Sales and the like. I've always liked art so this is something I really enjoy. Some I keep in the hopes that it will appreciate and others I sell quickly for a profit. A lot of people simple don't know what they have.

Jeffrey - Are you talking only about passive investments, or do active investments count? If you are including active investments, then business ownership. My husband owns his own business, and I used to own one. Those have been our best "investments," especially my husband's. When you own your own business, there is quite a bit of potential on both the upside and the downside. It's not for the faint of heart.

I had a neighbor who did private mortgages. I think she intended it to be more of a passive investment, but it turned active when she had buyers who stopped paying their mortgage, and she ended up having go through the eviction process followed by cleaning & fixing up a house that had been trashed to get it ready for re-sale.

My sister-in-law thinks she is investing in Hermes handbags. Who knows, maybe they will end up being money makers some day.

I have bought and sold cars in the past.

Buy a car on the cheap, do some repair work to it, and sell it at a profit. I did fairly well at it.

I currently don't have the time to do it anymore.

            re:Good Alternative Investments?

Its a good alternative to purchase a property at the time when its undervalued and after few years one can sell it out to attain a much better profit.

This is a good idea. It is the first time that I heard (or read) about it. I also have the taste for art especially with contemporary and modern ones so I think I can use this technique. They may not come in whooping price tags today but someone in the future will definitely appreciate them as much as I do.

Make sure you read about and get as much information on all options available to you as I did. There are so many choices of alternative investments and you have to weigh up the pros and cons of each.

Remember that if you invest in real estate, the important number is what you bought the house for. Real estate, especially when you are trying to flip in in the short-term, is about getting it cheap. That gives you more room to bargain with people if they don't want to sell at your price as well as giving you more room if the market goes down.

Shipping container investments - Container companies are expanding continuously as the market in China and the Pacific grows . More and more containers are needed with the increase in global export and import, causing a greater need for containers and higher yield on leasing them out. Definitely something worth looking into.
